In the beginning of the 20th C., the Belgian government strove to increase the Belgian share in the port traffic of the country. In the spring of 1916, the Belgian government started discussions with various parties, which led on June 26, 1916 to the foundation of the “Lloyd Royal Belge”. This company was created by the merger of the Antwerpsche Zeevaart Maatschappij, De Scheepvaart Maatschappij Gylsen and the S.A. de Commerce et de Navigation, all shipping companies controlled by the shipowners A. Brys and H. Gylsen. Already in 1930 this company was absorbed by the Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo. The new company was renamed "Compagnie Maritime Belge" (Lloyd Royal), but became better known by the acronym CMB.
