This painting relates to a lost work on board by Ludovico Cardi, il Cigoli (1559–1613), made for the Basilica of Saint Peter, Rome in 1604–1606 (circa 720 x 325 cm; see F. Faranda, Ludovico Cardi detto il Cigoli, Rome 1986, cat. no. 75). A similar but smaller version by Hendrik van Balen (1575-1632) was recently offered at Dorotheum (9 juni 2021, link). Our painting comes without a doubt from the entourage of the artist.
