Van Everdingen was born in Alkmaar and was trained by Claes Dircksz. van der Heck, Pieter Mulier (I) and Roelant Savery. He was active in Utrecht, Haarlem, Risør, Langesund, Trollhättan, Kungälv, Mölndal, Alkmaar, Spa, Sougné-Remouchamps and Amsterdam, where he died. Throughout his life he had several students under his wing, incl. Ludolf Bakhuizen, Gerard van Edema, Cornelis van Everdingen, Jan van Everdingen (II) and Pieter van Everdingen. (link) The painting is signed.
