Eileen Gray, born into an aristocratic Irish-Scottish family, studied architecture and design in London and Paris. She rose to fame with her lacquered wall and panel designs and revolutionized modern living with her ideas on design and architecture. A pioneer of Modernism, Gray is the only woman mentioned alongside icons like Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer. Her tubular steel furniture designs, now classics, and the legendary Adjustable Table E 1027, featured in the Museum of Modern Art, cemented her legacy. In the 1970s, she partnered with Zeev Aram to produce her designs, granting Aram Designs Ltd. worldwide rights in 1973. Her achievements were celebrated with a 2013 Centre Pompidou exhibition, and her restored house, E 1027, reopened in 2015. The E1027 is the classic among classics. Its ingeniously proportioned, distinctive form has made this height-adjustable table one of the most popular design icons of the 20thC. It is named after the house E 1027 ‘Maison en bord de mer’ that Eileen Gray built for herself and for her partner, Jean Badovici. The code-name likewise comes from: E is for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet), 2 for B(adovici) and 7 for G(ray). In the 1920s Eileen Gray experimented with various versions of the design of the Adjustable Table E1027. Together with Zeev Aram, Eileen Gray developed her Adjustable Table E 1027 for production in the 1970s (link).
