'Les Misérables' is a French epic and famous historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published on 31 March 1862, about Jean Valjean, a former convict who is released after 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. He seeks a better life but is pursued for life by the obsessed Inspector Javert. Valjean takes on the care of the girl Cosette and becomes involved in the Paris uprising of 1832. It is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th C. (link)
