The RMS Titanic was the second of a trio of Olympic-class luxury ships, which had to handle a large part of the transatlantic traffic. The ship was owned by the White Star Line shipping company and was built in Belfast. On the night of April 14-15, 1912, the Titanic collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage shortly before midnight; part of the starboard side was pierced in several places, and within three hours the ship had sunk. 1522 people on board lost their lives. Although this is not the largest maritime disaster in history in terms of casualties, it is the most famous, mainly because the ship was known to be unsinkable. (link)
