Examples bearing this design were once thought to have been made for Madame de Pompadour, hence the now well-known name of the pattern. Born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (French for 'fish' and painted in two of the cartouches on the plate), Madame de Pompadour was the famous mistress of Louis XV, who is said to be represented on the service by the eagles. However, that misconception has largely been debunked as discussed in Michel Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, cat. no. 190, and David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, Vol. II, London, 1978, cat. no. 449.

In an attempt to reconstruct the truncated ink signature, it seems to translate into: 濠梁崔子卥製 or Haoliang Cui Zilu zhi, which translates to: made by Cui Zilu, called Haoliang, likely active as a painter in a workshop of a southern Chinese city.
This genre of figure painting without background, focusing entirely on the precise rendering of bodily form and the sensitive depiction of facial expression, enjoyed great popularity. Such occasionally caricature-like paintings at times also offer a glimpse into marginalized groups within the society of once-prosperous South Chinese cities has been popular from the Song dynasty onwards.
The eccentric old man, clad in a tattered yet colorful patchwork robe, is shown making his way with a blind man’s staff and a begging bowl. The finely detailed depiction of one closed eye and the other only slightly open indicates his blindness, which seems to contrast with his broad smile and cheerful disposition.

"Ville de Bruxelles - Gd. meeting d'aviation - Les dimanche19 lundi 20 mardi 21 juillet à 3 heures de l'après midi sur l'hippodrome de Stockel - Chute dans le vide de 1000m de hauteur en parachute - Par Mme Cayat de Castella du biplan pilotépar champel".
Lucienne Cayat de Castella was a French parachutist who died on July 26, 1914, at the Stockel racecourse (near Brussels) during a demonstration flight (her parachute failed to deploy, whereas her previous attempt in Nevers on May 17 had been perfectly successful).
She was the first woman to parachute from an airplane in 1913, at only 22 years old. That same year, she and American Giorgia 'Tiny' Broadwick (1893-1978) tested one of the models manufactured by her husband, Georges Cayat. She was attached by three leather straps under the tail of her Rob aircraft, the parachute being fixed under a wing and connected by another harness to her armpits. Her hands were wrapped in rags to protect them from injury by the cables she was gripping. Her husband, inventor of a compressed air assisted opening system, detached it at an altitude of 800 meters, when her face was barely 50 centimeters from the propeller.
It was the researcher and writer Bernard Pharisien who finally uncovered the truth. The unfortunate parachutist's true identity was in fact Lucienne Blaise, born in Saint-Benoît-sur-Seine (Aube) in 1892. For decades, the first French woman parachutist to jump from an airplane was known as 'Madame Cayat de Castella'. On May 17, 1914, she achieved a remarkable feat by parachuting from Nevers. Two years ago, the Paris-Nevers Parachuting Center paid tribute to her on the centenary of her first jump at Nevers Fourchambault Airport, which witnessed this feat in the last century. But the name of this intrepid young woman, who went down in history, turned out to be false. It had been given to her by the inventor of a parachute, Alphonse Cayat, a former actor turned inventor who gave him the pseudonym 'Cayat de Castellat'. He was known by this pseudonym. By letting people believe the parachutist was his wife, he benefited from the publicity surrounding her jumps (while also appearing a complete cad given the risks his 'wife' took). Capitalizing on the public's enthusiasm at the time for the burgeoning field of aeronautics, Cayat envisioned turning Lucienne's parachute jumps into a lucrative spectacle. Lucienne performed her jumps with the parachute invented by the former actor at air shows that attracted thousands of spectators, thus taking credit for part of her feat. The surname, which suggested a noble lineage, only added to the legend. But shortly after her exploit of May 17, 1914 in Nevers, she was killed during another jump on July 21, 1914 near Brussels. Her parachute had not opened (link).

- With Van Langenhove auctions, Ghent, Oct. 20, 2007, lot 75, described as 'The windmill of Cyriel Buysse'.
However, Cyriel Buysse only commissioned the construction of his small wooden windmill in 1922, to replace the large post mill on the Molenberg or Warande, originally from 1592. Buysse's windmill had two predecessors in Deurle:
(A) The Coolegem Mill (1547-1583/84): The Lordship of Nevele owned several fiefs in Deurle, outside its Warande estate, the most extensive of which were "ter Laecke" (15 acres) and "Roothuyse" (18 acres). On one of these fiefs, "ter Laecke," a wooden corn windmill was erected in 1547. This was later called the mill at Coolegem, after the name of the place where it stood. What happened to the windmill after March 12, 1583, is unknown. According to a chronicle from Nevele, in 1584 only the windmill in Nevele-dorp remained standing, while all the others had burned down. Indeed, the entire area surrounding Ghent had been devastated during the Spanish reconquest of our regions, and more specifically the city of Ghent, under Alexander Farnese. Entire villages had been burned down and depopulated. The Coolegem mill was possibly destroyed during these wars.
(B) The large post mill on the Molenberg or Warande (1592-1918): In 1592, a new windmill was built near the house of Joost van Oost (forestier), the tenant of the Warande, behind the church of Deurle on what is now the Molenberg. This mill succeeded the Coolegem mill, located a little further away, which was probably destroyed in 1583 or 1584. In 1911, the Molenberg estate was sold to the Cyriel Buysse-Dijserinck from Afsnee, who built his wooden stilt house there. The windmill itself, however, was not included. The mill in Deurle was blown up by four retreating Germans from Bremen at 5 AM on November 2, 1918, just a few days before the armistice. Cyriel Buysse deeply regretted this destruction.
The current windmill (1922): With the compensation received for war damage, Cyriel Buysse had a smaller windmill built in almost the same location in 1922. It was a half-sized pole mill, which initially had two functions: grinding grain and pumping water to supply the stilt house. After his son René Buysse-Nerinckx inherited the Molenberg and its mill in 1932, the small mill fell into disuse. He removed the stilt house in 1939 and built the still-existing thatched villa on the same site.

The back with a reference to most probably Pieter Pourbus (1523-1584). However, it is more than likely that this is a work by a Fleming who was active at the French court as a miniaturist in the period 1600-1620. As a consequence, the name Pourbus possibly refers to Frans II Pourbus (1569-1622), which would fit in nicely with the history of the work. The work may have been made based on the painting 'Henri IV, roi de France (1553-1610) en costume noir' by Frans Pourbus le Jeune, nowadays part of the Louvre collection (link).
