Provenance:
- Ex-collection Gilissen, Maastricht, the Netherlands.
- Ex-collection L. Sohl, the Netherlands.
- Ex-collection notary X, Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
- Ex-collection Habets, Valkenburg, the Netherlands. Various newspaper articles from the 1955s link the painting to Rembrandt's oeuvre, including through a monogram R and a year, presumably 1635. ('Schilderij van Rembrandt in Valkenburg ontdekt?', Volkskrant, November 1955). In the year 1960, the painting reappeared in the Dutch press and was attributed to Joachim Utewael. ('Gerestaureerd doek waarschijnlijk van Joachim Utewael', Volkskrant, June 1960).
