Jan van Lokhorst came from a well-known Utrecht family of painters. Both his father (the animal painter Dirk van Lokhorst) and his brother (Dirk Pieter) and sister (Ida) were active as painters. Born in Utrecht where he was active until approximately 1872, he later moved to Brussels, but returned to his home country at regular intervals. He died in 1893 in Veenhuizen.
