Ref.: N. de Castro, Chinese Porcelain and the Heraldry of the Empire, Porto, 1988, p. 253 illustrates a plate from this service, which was made for the anniversary of Vasco da Gama's famous 1497-1499 journey. One of Vasco da Gama's ships, whose name is unknown, was abandoned at the Cape of Good Hope, and therefore shown on the present lot are the São Gabriel, the Berrio, and the São Rafael, which successfully completed the journey.
