The painting is a copy (without the angels in the sky and on the left side) after a work of Giovanni Battista Pagi (1554-1627). The original can be seen in the Musei di Strada Nuova-Palazzo Bianco, Genoa, inv. PB 2833 (link). The drawing by Paggi is kept in the National Galleries Scotland, inv. D 3079 (link).

Around 1600, the design was available in the Netherlands through an engraving by Cornelis Galle, which is kept in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, object number: RP-P-OB-6593 (link).

The image soon became very popular and a very similar composition can be found in works attributed to Gerard de la Vallée (1596/97-after 1667) and Jan Brueghel (1568-1625) and Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625), respectively Sotheby's New York City, 3 October 1996, lot 55 and Hampel Kunstauktionen Munich, 19 September 2006, lot 267 (link and link).
