Several parallels can be drawn with a portrait of a nobleman, half-length, in armor with a white lace collar and an orange sash, in a painted oval by Gerard van Honthorst, sold at Christie's Amsterdam in 2013 (Sale 3040, 20-21 November, Lot 72; link) or with several portraits of Friedrich zu Dohna (1621-1688) after Van Honthorst and by his workshop (link).

 

Provenance:

- With an old inventory number '36' on the reverse.

- Private collection, Belgium

 

Condition: (UV-checked)

- Painting in general in good and hangable condition.

- Panel consists of three parts, the parts strenghtened.

- Minor scratch to the left top corner.

- Some very minor flaking.

- Some cleaning and restoration recommanded.

 - UV-light shows the typical colour of the varnish, although some retouches visible (e.g. the hair of the man).
