- Ex-collection Habets, Valkenburg, the Netherlands. Various newspaper articles from the 1955s link the painting to Rembrandt's oeuvre, including through a monogram R and a year, presumably 1635. ('Schilderij van Rembrandt in Valkenburg ontdekt?', Volkskrant, November 1955). In the year 1960, the painting reappeared in the Dutch press and was attributed to Joachim Utewael. ('Gerestaureerd doek waarschijnlijk van Joachim Utewael', Volkskrant, June 1960).

Condition: (UV-checked)
- The work in general in rather good and hangable condition.
- Relined and unframed.
- Under UV-light, numerous touch-ups and overpainted smaller parts visible, in different stages and all over the painting.
- The central scene less overpainted in comparison with back and foreground.
- In an ideal situation, the work undergoes a professional restoration. In this way, the quality of the work will be better reflected.
