- In 1752-1753, Carle van Loo (1705-1765) produced a series of four allegories of the fine arts for Madame de Pompadour's Salon de Compagnie at the Château de Bellevue. Distributed by engraving, these works were a great success, as evidenced by the numerous painted reproductions. Our canvases are variant reproductions of two of the four paintings in the series commissioned for the Salon de Compagnie, now in the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in San Francisco (see also the exhibition catalogue 'Carle Vanloo, Premier peintre du roi', Nice, Clermont-Ferrand, Nancy, 1977).
