Full title: Topographia Germaniae Inferioris. Das ist Beschreibung und Abbildung der vornehmsten Staetten ... in den XVII Niederländischen Provintien.

Born in Basel, Matthaeus Merian studied in Zurich and then worked in Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris, before returning to Basel in 1615. The following year he moved to Frankfurt, where he spent most of his working life. With Martin Zeiler, a German geographer, and later with his son, Matthaeus Merian the Younger, he produced a 21-volume series of books known as the Topographia Germaniae. The present volume concerns the region of Flanders and features many of the fine engraved views, maps and plans for which the work is so highly regarded.
