Jozef (Theodore-Joseph-Louis) Geirnaert (Eeklo, 1790 – Ghent, 1859) is a name that simply cannot be left out among the Meetjesland Masters. This scion of a prominent Eeklo family demonstrated his incredible talent from an early age and, with his historical genre paintings, quickly surpassed his teachers in national competitions. His oeuvre evolved over the years from neoclassical history paintings to more bourgeois and domestic genre scenes, but his signature always guaranteed artistic quality of international caliber.
