Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Elisabeth of Thuringia, was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary and the landgravine of Thuringia.
Elizabeth was married at the age of 14, and widowed at 20. After her husband's death, she regained her dowry, using the money to build a hospital where she herself served the sick. She became a symbol of Christian charity after her death in 1231 at the age of 24 and was canonized on 25 May 1235. She is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. She was an early member of the Third Order of St. Francis, and is today honored as its patroness.
Condition:
- Generally in good condition, with typical small losses and retouching to the polychromy throughout and age-related cracks to the wood, most notably on the back.
- Small holes to the back from an earlier fixation.
- Traces of old presence of woodworm to the underside, no woodworm actually present.

The original design by Reiche is preserved in the Cabinet des Estampes in Paris: modelled as Urania, the muse of astronomy, studying a celestial globe surrounded by attributes representing the sciences.

- The mantel clock in very good condition, with the usual superficial wear, especially to the globe. Fine quality.

The original lithograph served as a poster for his solo exhibition at the Salon des Cent in Paris and was published by the French magazine La Plume. The Ensor exhibition came about at the initiative of Ensor's friend Eugène Demolder. The exhibition ran from December 15, 1898, to January 15, 1899, at no. 31 rue Bonaparte. The depiction of Christ surrounded by tormenting devils is derived from the drawing 'Devils Tormenting Me' from 1888 (Chicago, The Art Institute), later reworked in the etching of the same name (inv. 1998-B-92) and the lithograph of the same name, both from 1895. With a dedication to August Van Yper—presumably added later ('Pour August Van Yper James Ensor'). August Van Yper was an amateur artist. He became best known for his loyal service to James Ensor. Van Yper worked for and lived in James Ensor's house. Even after Ensor's death, he was allowed to remain in his home and received and guided visitors around in a personal manner. (link)
